Breaking down the Earthquakes

With as deep and talented a midfield as you’ll find in all of MLS, Frank Yallop has made San Jose one of the most attractive sides in the league early this season.  Here’s a few things to look for from the Earthquakes when they play host to D.C. United at 10:30 Wednesday night in a game that will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet Plus.

IN ATTACK

Veteran guidance helps Pontius' move to forward

In the post-match press conference following Chris Pontius’ hat trick against New York, D.C. United head coach Ben Olsen said his midfielder-turned-forward was “still new at the position” and that the 24-year-old’s movement off the ball “can get a lot better”.

Just six days later, Olsen was singing a rather different tune.

“Today is the first time I really realized he can play forward,” said the Black-and-Red’s second-year coach after D.C.’s win over Houston on Sunday.  “He’s going to learn the position very quickly.”

Unlikely heroes along United back line

On an evening where D.C. United’s offense failed to score, a makeshift defense shut down Seattle’s vaunted attack to earn a scoreless draw at RFK.  Key to the performance was Dejan Jakovic, who came off the bench and turned in a ninety-minute effort in replacing the suspended Brandon McDonald.

“He stepped in and did well to be vocal,” veteran Robbie Russell said of Jakovic.  “What we wanted from him was a big, physical presence and he showed that.  He did a great job.”
